Ecotourism and Outdoor Pursuits

Overview

This programme is designed to prepare students for work in Activity Centres. Students will receive instruction and qualifications in the following:
  • FETAC Level 3 Component Certificate in Kayaking
  • FETAC Level 3 Component Certificate in  Outdoor Pursuits
  • FETAC Level 5 Component certificate in Tourism Awareness
  • Certificate in First Aid in the Wilderness
Duration: 7 weeks
Schedule:  26th of July  – mid September,  3 days per week
Location:  Rathvilly, Co. Carlow/Baltinglass Outdoor Education Centre
Eligibility: In receipt of jobseekers allowance for more than 3 months
Fees:  Administration Acceptance Fee €100
Course FREE
Equipment: Appropriate clothing, footwear and equipment are required

Assignments: All assessments are practical and verbal, with the exception of one written exam in Tourism

Outdoor Pursuits and Kayaking Syllabus –FETAC Level 3

Title Kayaking, Code DF0139, Level 3, Credit Value 1 credit

Purpose The module is designed to provide a practical Kayaking skills and strokes and to enable learners to kayak competently and safely under supervision on flat water. Learners who successfully complete this module will receive the Irish Canoe Union Level 5 Kayak Proficiency award.

Special Requirements Learners Learners must be able to swim.

Candidates who successfully complete this module will:
  1. Have developed standard kayaking strokes and techniques
  2. Understand the principles of personal safety
  3. Be aware of potential dangers in the kayaking environment
  4. Assist in standard rescues.

Assessment: 100% Practical Skills Test

Title Outdoor Pursuits, Code DF0152, Level 3, Value 1 credit

Purpose Students learn to participate in a range of outdoor adventure sports through a three day/two night residential visit to an outdoor activity centre.

Candidates who successfully complete this module will:

  1. Participate safely in a range of adventure sports
  2. Explore the opportunities provided by adventure sports as a lifelong activity
  3. Develop an awareness of their role in the care and protection of the natural environment
  4. Explore employment opportunities in adventure sports
  5. Enhance their ability to participate as a group member and take individual responsibility
  6. Participate in the planning and preparation for an adventure sports residential experience.
Units The Specific Learning Outcomes are grouped as three units.
  1. Pre-Visit: Planning and Preparation
  2. The Visit: Experience and Participation
  3. Visit Follow-Up

Module  Tourism Awareness Details


Module Code D20132  Level 5  Credit Value 1 credit

Purpose The purpose of this module is to enable the learner to understand the fundamental concepts of national and international tourism and to appreciate its role in the Irish economy. It is intended to prepare the learner for employment or further training in a related area.

Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  1. Understand the economic and social aspects of tourism at local, national and international level
  2. Appreciate the geographic and ecological aspects of tourism
  3. Understand the role of heritage in relation to tourism
  4. Understand the role of Irish culture in relation to tourism.
  5. Ecotourism

Assessment: Exam 50%, Project 50%
