Ecotourism and Equestrian Assistant Trail Ride Leader

Overview

This programme is designed to prepare students for work in the Equestrian industry as an assistant trail ride leader. Students will receive instruction and qualifications in the following:

  • British Horse Society Equestrian Tourism Certificate in Riding & Road Safety
  • British Horse Society Equestrian Tourism Certificate in Assistant Trail Ride Leader
  • FETAC Level 5 Component certificate in Tourism Awareness
  • Certificate in First Aid
Duration:   12 weeks
Schedule: 03 August - 27 October, 3 days per week
Location: Doyle’s Equestrian Centre, Rathvilly, Co. Carlow
Eligibility:  In receipt of jobseekers allowance for more than 3 months
Fees: Administration Acceptance Fee €150
Course FREE
Equipment: Appropriate clothing, footwear and equipment are required

Selection:  Interview & riding test
Riding Ability: Ability to manage a horse well at walk, trot, canter and Jump confidently.
Assignments:  All assessments are practical and verbal, with the exception of one written exam in Tourism

British Equestrian Tourism – Assistant Ride Leader Details

The Trekking & Riding Society of Scotland, The Association of Irish Riding Establishments, the Welsh Trekking & Riding Association and The British Horse Society have worked very closely together for the last few years to develop qualifications for those working in the equestrian tourism industry, particularly those taking out treks/trail rides/hacks.

Candidates must be capable of demonstrating the correct procedure and best practice involving a group of riders on the road. Designed for those working full or part time in the industry. The holder of this certificate is competent to take out a ride, a short trek or a hack of no more than two hours duration or to assist a Ride Leader on longer rides. An assistant should be a sensible, safe person who is able to communicate with and help first time riders as well as assisting in the basic day to day running of a tourism/trekking/riding holiday centre.

Assessment:          100% Practical and Verbal Skills Test

Module  Tourism Awareness Details

Module Code D20132  Level 5  Credit Value 1 credit

Purpose The purpose of this module is to enable the learner to understand the fundamental concepts of national and international tourism and to appreciate its role in the Irish economy. It is intended to prepare the learner for employment or further training in a related area.

Learners who successfully complete this module will:
  1. Understand the economic and social aspects of tourism at local, national and international level
  2. Appreciate the geographic and ecological aspects of tourism
  3. Understand the role of heritage in relation to tourism
  4. Understand the role of Irish culture in relation to tourism.
  5. Ecotourism

Assessment:         Exam 50%, Project 50%
